Ok well ,
Starting off as a "bum & beggar" as Nearly Normal Robert puts out(Actually kids birthdays is what I did)...
I've buggered beggars around the world to reside in NZ years later....from London to NZ,Europe has a great history and as Martin says you continue to bump in to untamed genius's who've been on a 30yr career circuit we no nothing about.Going back to Greece or further is a massive project in itself Checker .A few pages, a small prologue would be adequate.
I think street performing has had a massive upsurge in the last 20/30 years around the world.
From The sweat times of Covent Garden ,Washington Sq,Pompedo,Jacksons Sq,Edinburgh,Pier 39 etc
To the sweet times of Edmonton,Christchurch,Sydney,Denver, Waterloo ........
That is the time that needs to be covered, fuck that is a massive book in itself, subjects such as hat lines could get a mention and what would be bang on if the originator was given credit for 'em(pat your back Butty and keep patting oh and find Kean'o' meet up pat keep patting, pet keep petting...lol !)
If you only do a history of circle shows mention in the prologue about the other forms.
I've seen a couple of generations created in front of my eyes and they need to be covered, the Aussie circuit influenced massively by Keane'o' then Lucky
The Kiwi circuit with people like PC,Mr Moon, myself and Jodi Wright.....
Dick Finkel in Canada etc etc etc etc....
The last 30yrs is massive in itself and Bob I'll give you whatever help I can(%?)
Nick (beggar-bum)Nickolas

p.s.Martin is still alive!!

Nickyboy et al,
Got a copy of Patty Campbell's "The Sidewalks of Yur' P" sitting in front of me now... it covers the days in Europe just previous to the "Passing the Hat" publication... I will wade into it (it's huge) and get back to y'all when I get a chance. FYI, Peter Post promised me an invite to a ol' timers get together (Jango, Bassi et al) this summer so that (plus the info. in Patti's book) should kick start the European side of the equation ... in lieu of the Glastonbury fest, anyone got ideas on how to get as much UK info. ('81-'01) as quickly as possible? Contacts? e me direct OK ?!
Lead, follow or get out of the way,
Bug

Greetings!

First, I would buy both of Patty Campbell's books if I knew how. Can any one help me out here?

Second, my three questions are:

To El Gleno: How many times have you made an audience member pee their pants? You're hilarious!

To Lady Margo: Where did you get that bubble spitting airplane?

To Nick Nickolas and anybody else: Do you sell tshirts or videos of your act? If not, why not? Seems like it would be a nice add on to your web site or?

Regarding the current book project, don't be afraid to put a web address in it for cross selling additional books and videos, t shirts, etc. Just a thought.

Oh and put me down for at least one copy.

Walking Tall,

Hold on tight everyone!!! ...

I just got this from Dale (yes, Thompson) ... I was just trying to get some info. from him for this book I've been writing on street performing and boom, he lays this bomb on me ... by the way, I deleted some stuff he mentioned out of sheer decency and respect for others.

Dale writes:
"The book idea sounds great. The only problem I have is that I signed a contract with McLellan and Stuart, one of Canadaís leading publishers two years ago to produce a book on street performing using data and pictures I had collected over seven years. I completed the draft last May and unfortunately itís being subject to unfair and gross editing but we are making some progress. Little did you guys realize that this was one of my plans all along? Fuck the salary and fame, keep notes on all the bullshit that goes on behind the scenes and eventually one will have enough fodder to complete diminish the reputation of many and cast a wary eye one the industry altogether while making a fancy dollar doing it. Not that the advance was any great deal but $$$$ Cdn was pretty decent compared to the smucks that write goofy heroic novels. They usually get $$$. The pictures that will be included may surprise you as I had several hundred photos from each year of performances and the asshole antics behind the scenes. The photographer was a young kid who hung around everyone daily and just snapped pictures of everyone and everything. He had no idea what he was doing but one out of every hundred photos captures a moment and some moments you donít really want to remember. But then again it was them not me so I really donít give a shit. There are some very embarrassing ones that will be published that will cause a stir but I donít care as the publishers reviewed the contracts that each performer signed and I have the right to keep and maintain these photos for 50 years or something like that. Yes the performers will scream and shout abuse but hey come to the Philippines and get me. The initial run is going to be around 50,000 copies with direct access to the States and while we never are sure or release date I suspect in will be next July or August. Given the racy content it should be fairly controversial and that is all the better for me, royaltiesí man, royalties, the name of the game. As far as you and your image, well letís just say youíre considered one of the good guys, mind you what some of the others had to say about you does not paint a pretty picture at all but you are used to that. You may want to talk to a couple so-called performers friends when you read some of their comments. One could call it an Ďexposeí but for all intensive purposes thatís exactly what it is. The last two chapters are updated from the last two years and the publishers had some bozo continue gathering the juice and he got some good stuff but the best comes from the first eight chapters and thatís all pure Daleski in his finest most biting edge satirical criticism that one can buy. You know the damn thing might even make the fertile grounds for a movie however my agent can be full of shit 99% of the time but he did get me $$$ so one never knows. As such I really have my hands tied to pursue any other writing project till after this is released and then again you may want to disown me by then, perhaps worse."

uh-oh,
Robert

P.S. You should hear what I left out!

Whats good for the goose...
For those of us perhaps not being 'racy or 'fairly controversial' over some 7 year period that could be loosely called a career throughout what, nth america?
When? 80s, 90s?
Who exactly is this self serving legend called dale and when can we look forward to the movies Dale 1, 2 and 3.
So you've lost one narcissist Robert.
Not even a hiccup let alone a belch.
While some of what you are writing would surely come under, "disfunctional lives of the self inflated and unknown-What I did with my life before moving to a third world country where the little girls are cheap"
I'm sure your treatments motivation is not entirely about scandalious behaviour conducted in a small pond some time in the past.
Probably afford him new thatch for his roof, who is this 'legend' anyway?

Who indeed?
A legendary, exploitive sheister who presided over the Halifax Buskers empire for - what did he say? 7 years? The tenor of his note to Robert is entirely indicative of his demeanour - the fact that he's now trying to carve out yet another buck on the backs of people with talent and septums - something he has neither of - is as predictable as the trail of slime left behind by a slug. Other than all that - heckfire! what a super guy!

Alert!

Just received this ... apparently it was Dale's idea of a joke to send me the former e-mail ... what an asshole!

My dear friend Robert,

I assume that you somewhat shocked and appalled considering the tone of the last missive being forwarded in your direction. Well rest assured it was all bullshit. Just thought that I would get some kind of rise out of you. Youíre sooo touchy at times.

Back to reality! Yes someday some one or some persons will put together a reasonable book about the art but if you want my two cents worth I believe that if would be far more productive o develop either a television or movie script. Books are a tough market however there is always a studio or movie group willing to buy something that is of mass appeal and you must admit everyone knows about street performers in one way or the other.

I wouldnít mind sharing a few ideas and see where they go from there. With the right chemistry something truly wonderful could develop but it needs a healthy dose of reality in a sense that the story is targeted to a primary market where the money is.

I will provide some ideas that I have jotted down and letís exchange ideas for a while. If something begins to sparkle I know of a perfect island where we can work for a couple months to work out the good stuff. Of course, these expenses would be paid by the companies interested in buying in advance and I think we could sell our idea very easily.

Love ya

dale

I'm looking for a book entitled "The Buskers" by David Cohen and Ben Greenwood.
Apparently, it traces street entertainment as far into the past as ancient Rome.

And no, it doesn't mention me.

By the way the chapter I'm writing now is entitled:

Romulus, Remus or Raoul?

Hi Robert,

Is it too late to post questions (don't care if I'm in the book)?

1. Have you ever regretted pursuing a career as a street performer?

2. What's kept you going through the bad times?

3. Where's the strangest place you've performed?

Most of the other ones I have, have already been asked by other people.

Cool

Glad it came in handy. Martin just stopped in, and I got the guided tour of your new website. Bravo! Bastard, you are raising the bar on us. Looking forward to reading the stories, but the lawn needs mowing. Must've fired the lawn girl, or given her the summer off.

ps I think that hat is a little big on you.

Hey Robert, the new website is really smashing ("smashing" is not a word I think I've ever used as a adjective, but somehow it just seems to fit). Kudos to your web designer.

And I even learned something--it seems I unknowingly stole your line/bit about putting out the torch using only your mouth. So, I guess from now on I'll say, "I will now extinquish this torch using only the Butterfly Man's mouth." Yeah, that works.
